Trying to figure out which Phasmophobia Spirit Box questions to use? If you're looking for that important evidence while tracking a ghost, you're going to need to know how to commune with them.
Not all ghosts will communicate via Spirit Box, but if you ask the right questions you can narrow down your search. So, below you'll find out how to use the Spirit Box in Phasmophobia, plus the questions, phrases, and answers we know ghosts respond to so you can continue gathering the evidence you need.
Recent updates
The spirit box got some major updates in an August 2023 patch. We've updated all our advice to reflect the new tiers of spirit box, how to properly use each one, and questions you can ask.

How to use the Phasmophobia Spirit Box
Before you can get a ghost to answer your questions on any tier of spirit box you first need to:
- Turn the spirit box on (you should hear static noise)
- Be in the same room that the ghost is in
- Turn off all lights (including lamps)
- If the ghost is said to respond to people who are alone, ensure you're the only player in the room
There are now three tiers of spirit box that increase in effectiveness if you choose to use them. Note that the range on the tier 1 spirit box is so short that even if you're in the correct room you may not get an answer unless you're close enough to the ghost itself. The response rate is also lower at tier 1, so you may need to spend more time asking questions to actually get an answer compared to the tier 3 box.
Here are the quick facts on how to use each one effectively:
Tier 1
- Range: 3 meters
- Mic input working: Solid white light indicator
- No ghost answer: Red light flashes beside ghost icon
- Evidence: White light flashes beside ghost icon
Tier 2
- Range: 4 meters
- Mic input working: Microphone icon beside the FM on spirit box screen
- No ghost answer: Black X symbol flashes on spirit box screen
- Evidence: Ghost symbol flashes on spirit box screen
Tier 3
- Range: 5 meters
- Mic input working: Solid white light indicator next to "MIC INPUT"
- No ghost answer: Red lights flash below "response"
- Evidence: White lights flash below "response"
Phasmophobia Spirit Box questions and phrases
As has been the case since launch with the spirit box, the actual answer a ghost gives you often isn't important. Getting an answer at all qualifies as having the spirit box as evidence, so which question they answer doesn't typically matter. Since you need to be in the room with them to get an answer, asking where they are doesn't tell you anything you don't already know either.
There are a couple ghosts that have specific responses to the spirit box though:
- A Moroi will curse a player (causing bigger sanity losses) for asking questions through a spirit box
- A Deogen can give a unique response on the spirit box that sounds like deep, aggressive breathing
Several years back, players datamined Phasmophobia and turned up a list of valid spirit box questions. It's a pretty long list, and many questions are somewhat repetitive of one another, so it's easy to stick to the shorter list of questions that have been popular since Phasmo's original launch.
Here's a list of questions (and some demands) that you've likely to get an answer to through the spirit box:
- Are you friendly?
- Where are you?
- How old are you?
- What do you want?
- Why are you here?
- Are you angry?
- Are you friendly?
- Should we leave?
- What are you?
- Are you here?
- Are you with us?
- Can you show yourself?
- Can you give us a sign?
- Can you talk?
- Can you speak to us?
- Open/close a door
- Turn on/off the light
- Show us a sign
- Show yourself
