Five new Steam games you probably missed this week

Dungeon Warfare 2

Steam Page
Released: July 6
Developer: Valsar
Publisher: Valsar
Price: $14.99

As the name implies, this is a sequel to the cult 2015 tower defense game. You play as a dungeon lord, and it’s your responsibility to prevent adventurers from plundering your home. In other words, you’re defending against the kind of character you’d normally play as in a dungeon crawler. Your main tool is traps, and you’ll have 32 to choose from, with each boasting eight unique traits. There are procedurally generated dungeons but also 50 handcrafted ones, and you’ll be defending against 30 types of enemies and five major boss encounters. If you enjoyed the first Dungeon Warfare (and many thousands did), then this is an obvious highlight of the week.

Seeds of Resilience

Steam Page
Released: July 4
Developer: Subtle Games
Publisher: Subtle Games
Price: $12.99

Seeds of Resilience is a management and building game set on a deserted island. You’ll found a village here, with a mind to preventing natural disasters from destroying all of your hard work. The turn-based affair has players evolve from primitive stone axe wielders to full-blown medieval town planners, but whatever your advancement, you’ll still need to pay attention to the weather. Seeds of Resilience hit Early Access just last week and doesn’t have a huge following on Steam as yet. Still, the trailer looks promising, and the studio expects it to stay in development for another “3 to 12 months”.

DERE EVIL .EXE

Steam Page
Released: July 4
Developer: Darius Immanuel D. Guerrero
Publisher: AppSir, Inc
Price: $0.99

This platformer-cum-horror game is a bit out of leftfield, and first impressions suggest it’s yet another Steam “joke” game. But further inspection suggests something genuinely interesting, and if you’re familiar with the internet storytelling phenomenon known as ‘creepypasta’ then you’re close to understanding the dynamic here. DERE EVIL .EXE mostly plays like a peaceful, innocent, 16-bit twitch-oriented platformer until… suddenly it doesn’t. Since it’s only a dollar, I reckon it’s worth taking a risk to see what it’s all about. It’s the sequel to DERE .EXE, for those aware that DERE .EXE exists.

Garage: Bad Trip

Steam Page
Released: July 6
Developer: Zombie Dynamics
Publisher: tinyBuild
Price: $14.99

Since Hotline Miami popularised ultra-violent top down action games, there have been scores of them. Garage: Bad Trips is the latest to join the canon, with its retro-VHS aesthetic, abundance of pixelated blood, and irreverent attitude. Inspired by “splatterpunk” you’ll be navigating ominously lit underground parking lots in order to “find a passage to the hidden obscure underworld”. You’ll do so, obviously, by killing things. I like the premise, and like Hotline Miami, it focuses on quick thinking tactics rather than mindless hack and slash.

Diner Bros

 Steam Page
Released: July 6
Developer: JAYFLGAMES
Publisher: JAYFLGAMES
Price: $9.99

Diner Bros is a four-player cooperative game heavily reminiscent of Overcooked, though you won’t find fireballs or anything so “unrealistic” in this game. In fact, there are tycoon elements here, and while it’s cute and cheerful and far from a simulator, it’s more grounded in the reality of the hospitality industry. You’ll be working towards establishing your restaurant’s reputation, and dealing with exceptionally challenging customers such as punks, runners and… food critics. You can play it alone, but Diner Bros seems designed for local cooperative shenanigans.

These games were released between 07/03-07/09. The first page of this list is updated every Sunday and previous weeks are archived on the following pages. Some online stores give us a small cut if you buy something through one of our links. Read our affiliate policy for more info.
